Essential Care & Maintenance Guide: Afghan Marble & Onyx

Natural Afghan marble and translucent onyx are timeless architectural investments that elevate residential and commercial properties. However, because both calcite marble and cryptocrystalline onyx are porous natural stones, proper care and sealing are vital to maintaining their original mirror polish and translucent glow.

Whether you have installed Herat White marble flooring, a Black & Gold reception counter, or a Backlit Green Onyx feature wall, this guide outlines daily cleaning, sealing protocols, and stain prevention.

1. Initial Sealing Protocol (Post-Installation)

Natural stone sealing is the single most important step after installation:

• Impregnating Sealer Selection: Use a high-performance solvent-based or water-based fluoropolymer penetrating sealer. Do not use surface topical waxes that block breathability.
• Application Frequency: High-traffic marble flooring should be sealed immediately upon installation and re-sealed every 12 to 18 months.
• Onyx Special Care: Translucent onyx panels used in backlit applications require breathable impregnators that do not alter light transmission or create yellowing haze over LED panels.

2. Daily & Weekly Cleaning Routine

DOs:

• pH-Neutral Cleaners: Always use warm water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner (pH 7.0).
• Microfiber Mops: Dust mop white marble floors daily with a clean, dry microfiber pad to remove gritty sand and soil that act as abrasives.
• Immediate Spill Cleanup: Wipe up spills (wine, coffee, citrus juices, oil) immediately using a blotting motion.

DON'Ts:

• Avoid Acidic Cleaners: Never use vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, ammonia, or standard bathroom tile cleaners on calcite marble or onyx. Acid reacts with calcium carbonate, causing dull etch spots.
• Avoid Abrasive Scourers: Do not use steel wool, scouring pads, or abrasive powder cleaners that scratch polished stone surfaces.

3. Protecting Backlit Onyx Feature Panels

Translucent Afghan Onyx installed with LED backlighting requires special structural and thermal consideration:

4. Removing Etches & Stains

If acid etching or oil staining occurs, follow these restorative remedies:

• Organic Stains (Coffee/Tea): Apply a poultice made of hydrogen peroxide (12%) mixed with diatomaceous earth powder. Cover with plastic wrap for 24 hours.
• Oil/Grease Stains: Apply a poultice made of acetone and absorbent chalk powder to draw out deeply embedded oils.
• Light Etch Marks: Buff lightly using a stone marble polishing powder and a white felt pad on a low-speed polisher.
